There are more than two sides to the lockdown argument

And so it begins…

LIFT THE LOCKDOWN!

I hear politicians saying it. I see commentators writing it. I hear economists begging for it.

I see businesses demanding it.

So what should we do?

You see, it’s not just as simple as one side saying “LIFT” and the other saying “DON’T.”

There are scientists and medics saying “DON’T.”

Why?

1. The numbers dying are still high.
2. The number of those being diagnosed is still high.
3. Testing still isn’t yet where it should be.
4. We’re still not 100 per cent sure of all the ways it is transmitted.
5. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Then there are business leaders and experts on the economy who say “LIFT IT (or at the very least EASE IT.)

Why?

1. The economy soon will be damaged beyond repair.
2. Other illnesses – heart conditions and cancer for example, are not being treated.
3. There are mental health issues arising.
4. The lockdown is bad for children.
5. The elderly need to be allowed out for walks and fresh air.

Then there are politicians who say “LIFT IT (or at the very least EASE IT.)”

Why.

1. I think it’s the popular thing to say and I might win me votes if there’s another election soon.
2. I think it’s the popular thing to say and I might win me votes if there’s another election soon.
3. I think it’s the popular thing to say and I might win me votes if there’s another election soon.
4. I think it’s the popular thing to say and I might win me votes if there’s another election soon.
5. I think it’s the popular thing to say and I might win me votes if there’s another election soon.

Then there are those who say “JUST LIFT THE DAMNED RESTRICTIONS.”

Why?

1. We’ve been very good or at least pretty good up to this.
2. We should be rewarded for the above.
3. I want to meet my friends.
4. I’m going crazy at home for God’s sake.
5. I’m gumming for a pint.

Me?

Well I’m in a group which says this about lifting restrictions.

1. I’m not an expert
2. I’d rather my see my friends in a pub in three months than a box in two.
3. If Donald Trump is in favour of it, it must be wrong.
4. If our own Loonies (and we all know who they are) are in favour of it, it’s DEFINITELY wrong.
5. One death caused by lifting restrictions too early, is one too many.
And, anyway, my local off licence delivers…
